| Did you know the WHAS Crusade for Children is America's oldest and most successful local telethon. Launched in 1954 by WHAS-TV in Louisville, Kentucky, it has raised over $222 million to support special needs children, with 100% of donations going directly to local agencies, schools, and hospitals.
Unlike many national charities of the era, the Crusade’s founders were determined to keep the funds local. They set a precedent that 100% of every dollar raised goes straight back to the community, with all overhead costs covered separately by generous corporate and civic sponsors.
The true engine of the Crusade’s longevity is the region's firefighters. They raise nearly 60% of all funds annually by hosting roadblocks, boot drives, and community events across Kentucky and Southern Indiana.
