The first alarm came in at 6:13 pm. The abandoned building, located at 266 Franklin Street in Worcester Massachusetts, was six stories with a basement and had no windows above the first floor. The walls and ceilings were covered in cork, tar and foam for insulation. Each floor was a maze of connecting meat lockers which were unfamiliar to the firefighters. The firefighters made entry to search for two homeless people known to be in the building but had left after knocking over a candle which started the fire. Their last radio transmission was at 6:55 pm. They lost their lives attempting to help someone they had never met. Today we remember Paul Brotherton, Timothy Jackson, Jeremiah Lucey, James Lyons, Joseph McGuirk and Thomas Spencer, "The Worcester Six".
